When one looks at punk one thinks fanzines, disorder and
rebellion. Which is all true. But there was one graphic designer who brought
the exact same ideas and altered them into professional graphic design, his
name was Jamie Reid.
He is most famous for his works done for the sex pistols and
for suburban press. Till this very day he is still generating new artworks
which seem to be highly influenced from the psychedelic age of the 60s. but in
the 70s it was a complete different story creating full blown punk works.
The main characteristics of these works the typography; this
style of typography was a rebellious form of type which strayed away form the
neat and clean typography seen elsewhere, it also strayed away from the
typography of the 60s, which was characterized by it almost illegible flow
(showing movement). Punk type had a ransom note style which worked remarkably
well, be it serif or sans serif was irrelevant, often combing the two in the
same work. This type was so focused on disorder that the more offset or
different each letter was the more appealing it was. Another characterizing was
getting ready existing images and ‘vandalizing’ them usually with this form of
typography or found objects such as safety pins. This style had a bigger
influence on art then one would think, inspiring graffiti artists such as
Banksy to ‘vandalize’ paintings.
When we look closely at the works of Jamie reid we also see
a close link towards pop art. Having images with false colours.
Punk graphic design may be under looked at times but has has
a huge influence on graphic design all over the world.
