Art Nouveau

Lets start out with the definition of this term, Art nouveau Is the French term for ‘new art’. It was popular between 1890 and 1905. It was predominantly a fine art movement but it clearly influenced graphic design in too many ways not to consider it as one of the greatest inspirations. For example art nouveau went on to influence the psychedelic 60s.

When one looks at the characteristics one will notice that these characteristics are still constantly being used. In today’s modern day and age art movements still exist (graffiti art movement is just one example) but the art world is now run more by individuals, each individual drawing inspirations form different sources.

Art nouveau is a very stylized form of art and it in a way shows the raw beauty of detailed art, art for arts sake (opposite of the constructivist movement). It also has a graphicalised feel to it. It is animated with innovative lettering (combining type and image is a main graphical element). The works also tend to be colourful yet not showing much depth, having very bold outlines (which is a characteristic of modern day cartoons). Here I have placed two images of art nouveau, one from the actuall period and one is a modern work inspired highly by the period, adapting the subject matter to modern times.
