Hannah hoch was one of the originators of photomontage. She
was part of the dada movement which was an anti art movement which arose from
the depression that world war one brought with it. She had studied glass work
in a school of art but later started work for the red cross during the war.
Here we see one of her collage/ photomontages. This is one
of the iconic dada works that were created. First we shall look at the
characteristics of this particular work. We can see hand cut images placed over
each other all having a common sepia feel colour scheme. There is also some
typography which is present randomly thought this work. All for of order is
missing and there is no focal point on this work unless you consider the entire
image a focal point.
This has a very scrapbook feel to it which was later adapted
by the punk art movement in this fanzines and typography which will then
further influence grunge art and typography. These are all rebellious movements
which emerged for the dada movement. Although this particular work shows
disorder one can tell that there was some sort of strategy into the creation of
this piece.
